Founder story
Composting was never just a hobby.
Durvela’s founder has been composting for over 40 years. Over that time, he has tried nearly every kind of composting system: open piles, bins, tumblers, barrels, homemade systems, and commercial units. Each approach had strengths, but each also revealed the same recurring problems—mess, odor, inconsistent heat, poor mixing, pests, and unpredictable results.
With a background in microbiology, he understood that composting is not guesswork. It is a living biological process driven by microbes that need the right balance of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, moisture, and temperature. When those conditions are managed well, composting becomes faster, cleaner, and more dependable.
His teaching background shaped Durvela just as much as his scientific training. A good composting system should not only perform well—it should help people understand what is happening inside the drum. Durvela is designed to make composting easier to learn, easier to repeat, and easier to trust.
