Temperature tells you how active your compost is.

Compost temperature is one of the easiest ways to understand what is happening inside your pile or composter. When microbes have the right mix of food, oxygen, moisture, and volume, they generate heat as they break down organic material.

If compost is too cold, decomposition slows. If it gets too hot, microbial balance can suffer. The goal is not simply maximum heat — it is steady biological activity.

Cold or inactive

Compost is breaking down slowly. It may need more volume, more nitrogen-rich greens, better moisture, or more mixing.

80–110°F / 27–43°C

Warming up

Microbial activity is increasing, but the compost is not yet in a strong hot composting range.

110–130°F / 43–54°C

Active composting

The pile is working well. This is a useful range for steady decomposition, especially in smaller systems.

130–160°F / 54–71°C

Hot composting range

This is a common thermophilic hot-composting range for faster breakdown when moisture, oxygen, volume, and material balance are correct.

Above 160°F / 71°C

Too hot

Very high heat can slow beneficial biology. Add browns, mix carefully, and allow the material to cool.

Measuring Compost Temperature

How to measure compost temperature accurately.

A single surface reading can be misleading. Measure the active centre of the compost and watch the trend over time.

Why Compost Heats Up

Heat is created by microbial activity, not by the container alone.

Compost gets hot when microorganisms have the right working conditions. They need nitrogen-rich greens, carbon-rich browns, oxygen, moisture, and enough volume for heat to build.

A better composter can help retain heat and make mixing easier, but temperature still depends on what you add and how well the materials are balanced.

Too little material

Too dry

Microbes need moisture. Compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge, not dusty or soggy.

Too wet

Excess moisture pushes out oxygen and can create odors. Add dry browns and mix to restore structure.

Not enough greens

If the mix is mostly dry leaves or cardboard, it may need more nitrogen-rich material such as food scraps or fresh plant matter.

Not enough oxygen

Compacted compost can cool down and smell. Mix or rotate regularly to bring oxygen back into the material.

Cold weather

Outdoor temperature matters. Insulation, larger volume, and consistent loading can help compost stay more active in cooler conditions.
