COMPOST KNOWLEDGE / METHODS
01 / START WITH SCALE
Which composting method fits the job?
From a countertop worm bin to a managed commercial facility, every method uses the same biology. What changes is the system durability, labor required, material volume, site, equipment and amount of control over the process.
02 / HOME & ON-SITE
Small-scale methods. Built around your routine.
Every method has a place. The best Durvela fit depends on how much material you produce and how much control you need.
| Method | Benefits | Drawbacks | Best fit | Scale / year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen composter (dehydrator / grinder) | Compact and very low labour; enclosed appliance limits flies and smell while running. | Not biological composting; output still needs disposal or actual composting. | Homes reducing kitchen-scrap volume or odour before disposal. | Does not produce compost |
| Cold pile | Low equipment cost and labour; durable simple bin or enclosure. | Very slow; larger volume/area required; rodents, flies, and odour often present; incomplete breakdown in areas | Patient gardeners with leaves, prunings and yard waste. | Usually under 5 t |
| Turned hot pile | Higher throughput; heat can help manage seeds and pathogens. | Moderate-to-high labour; frequent turning involves high labor component; requires space, turning tools, browns and monitoring; rats, flies and odours frequently present. | Active gardeners, acreages and hobby farms with room to work. | Usually under 5 t |
| Durvela stainless steel rotary hot composter | Beautiful design; compact, enclosed and extremely durable; very easy to rotate the pile (ensuring good oxygen supply) and unload compost; easy to monitor temperature; eliminates rats; no flies or odour when managed correctly; hot composting destroyes pathogens and weed seeds | Higher up front cost; needs a balanced mix of carbon:nitrogen for best results; not for regional volumes. | Homes, farms, schools, cafés and on-site businesses seeking a contained routine. | Up to 15 t (Custom built larger systems upon request.) |
| Vermicomposting | Compact, quiet and low labour; produces castings with little odour when balanced; castings are nutrient rich | Worms are temperature-sensitive; fruit flies can appear with overfeeding. | Indoor or sheltered food scraps; apartments, classrooms and light household use. | Usually under 1 t |
| Bokashi fermentation | Compact, sealed and low labour; bucket limits pests, flies and odour during collection. | Requires inoculant and downstream finishing; not finished compost. | Small homes managing cooked food, meat or dairy before a finishing step. | Usually under 1 t |
| Trench composting | No bin or turning; low cost; buried food is inaccessible to most rats and flies. | Requires open ground and digging; no finished compost to move elsewhere. | Garden beds between planting cycles. | Usually under 5 t |
| Municipal green-bin collection | Very low household labour; no home odour, flies or rats beyond collection-bin management. | No finished compost at home; rules and service vary by municipality; often plastics and contaminants found in the finished compost | Homes with local organics collection. | Processed off-site |
03 / DURVELA ROTARY SYSTEMS
Control in a compact on-site system.
Durvela rotary composters are designed for recurring on-site material streams—not regional or municipal bulk processing.
Important: “Hot” depends on a balanced mix, sufficient batch mass and correct moisture. A rotary drum is not a shortcut around process management.
04 / COMMERCIAL METHODS
Large-scale only.
Designed for 50+ t / year.
These facility-scale approaches need engineered pads or dedicated structures, loading equipment, curing space, runoff management and site-specific operating approvals.
01
Windrow composting
Typically 50–5,000+ tonnes of finished compost / yearLong rows are turned with loaders or windrow turners to add oxygen and remix material.
02
Aerated static pile
Typically 100–5,000+ tonnes of finished compost / yearBlowers move air through pipes beneath a built pile; the active pile is not routinely turned.
03
In-vessel & agitated bay
Typically 100–10,000+ tonnes of finished compost / yearEnclosed vessels, tunnels or agitated bays control airflow and mixing within dedicated equipment.
THE DURVELA PRINCIPLE
Control the process.
Match the scale.
Durvela systems help farms, institutions and businesses process recurring organic material on site with an engineered rotary process.
